URBAN INTEGRATION

The new Evangelical daycare center St. Johannes, located in the diverse neighborhood of Oberhausen-Mitte in Augsburg, harmoniously integrates into the cityscape along Maschenbauerstraße with a two-story linear structure.

Facing the northern Maschenbauerstraße, the building forms distinct spatial edges. Towards the south, the structure terraces down to the garden area, creating spacious and protected outdoor play areas on two levels.

The development of the surrounding pitched roof structure of neighboring buildings gives the structure a proportionate and contextually appropriate division.

The eastern neighborhood square serves as the interface between the adjacent Löweneck Elementary School and the St. Johannes daycare center. By clearly orienting the main entrance towards the existing square and Maschenbauerstraße, a secure drop-off and pick-up area is ensured.

ACCESSIBILITY | INTERNAL ORGANIZATION

The building is accessed from both Maschenbauerstraße and the neighborhood square through the main entrance by parents and children. The spacious foyer serves as a waiting area for parents and a distribution point to the daycare group on the ground floor and the kindergarten groups on the upper floor.

Adjacent to the foyer, the multipurpose room and the open dining area are shared spaces that extend the continuous flow of space for internal events. The management office is located near the entrance to oversee the daycare center.

Employees access the daycare center through the parking lot and the western entrance. They can reach the decentralized staff room, changing rooms, and restrooms. The necessary rooms for daily operations are also located in close proximity.

The daycare center for infants (Kinderkrippe) is oriented towards the southern outdoor play area. It is accessible through a direct entrance from the corridor and a separate and protected entrance within the kindergarten's dressing area and mudroom.

The upper floor is accessed via a two-flight staircase in the foyer and a centrally located elevator. The generous play corridor allows children to move freely and withdraw to window niches for relaxation. The play corridor serves as an important communication area for the four groups.

All kindergarten group rooms are equally oriented towards the southern outdoor play terrace. This area includes raised beds for vegetable and herb planting, as well as spacious play and seating areas. Children access the outdoor play area on the ground floor through an external staircase with seating steps and a slide.

ECONOMY | MATERIALITY | FACADE

The room sizes are dimensioned according to the spatial program and tailored for cost-effective operation. The common areas mainly face south, providing appropriate lighting. At the same time, the structural sun protection of the ground and upper floors ensures shading. Extensive sun protection is ensured through an external, flexible system. Natural ventilation or cross-ventilation is provided through the opening wings of the facade windows and interior walls. The electricity demand is met by PV systems on the folded roof, oriented in an east-west direction. The green areas on the roof serve for rainwater retention and provide additional heat protection through evaporation cooling.

The facade of the daycare center features a light, vertical wooden slat cladding on the ground floor, giving the building a sense of lightness in combination with the generous openings. The upper floor stands out with its colorful shingle structure, creating a distinct and floating character. The varying arrangement of windows on the north facade reflects the interior function of this area of the daycare center to the outside. The folding of the roof combines the interior structure of the group rooms with the urban structure of the neighboring buildings across the street.
